VA TECH > A shooter was seen on campus

VA TECH
Home of
The HOKIES

*early evening update to this writing*
It's been a helluva emotional day.
As you will read below.

As I was online the newsflash came up
"A SHOOTER WAS ON THE CAMPUS OF
VA TECH"
and my heart dropped.
Kamryn was
AT
VA TECH
this week
at the Hokie Basketball camp
and
as I listened I heard
that a man with a gun
was seen in front of the building
right next door to where the
kids were all together
at
HOKIE basketball camp.
I felt dread
and a sickness came over me
with racing heart and pulse
and
I immediately texted Angie
with
"THERE IS A SHOOTER ON THE CAMPUS OF TECH, WHERE ARE YOU?"
The phone rang immediately and she told me she had also just heard it
and that she had just gotten off the phone with Dot, (aka> Mom, COB)
who was already on her way there
and
now
Angie too was on her way
to
VA TECH.
Thank God for Mom, she was all over it and enroute to little Kamryn!
I put on the live stream of the current happenings as we talked on the phone
so that she would not feel alone on the drive.
She told me that someone had just "cut her off" on the road as they were making a mad run up the road,
we both figured that they may well be also trying to get to VA TECH
as many were intantly floating back to that day not so long ago of the
VA TECH massacre
when a lone gunman took the lives of so many there.

We were both glad that Mom was already on her way,
and
we both knew that it would take a real big policeman with 4 point restraints to keep her from getting to
Kamryn.
She would not be stopped from that
I knew that much to be certain!
Angie I was so impressed with
as we both had increased heart rates
and we could still talk with reason
and
still laugh
under the very real and perceived threat that filled the airwaves
on that ride.
BUT
make no mistake,
we did feel our bodies under the pressure of
perceived threat
and some lunatic somewhere on campus with a loaded gun
and
could not help but remember
when.
Our phone call ended as she approached the entry to
Tech,
and she told me that she would text once inside
by then they were on
"lockdown".
I was thinking that Kamryn
was probably playing a fierce game
of
basketball
none the wiser of the threat that lingered outside the gymnasium along with the other children.
As parents frantically were making their way back to
Tech
and filled with the possibiliites
and the memories of
what had happened before there.
Children are remarkable that way.
And
after all they get to meet and see the
HOKIES
and to practice their skills and realize their passions and develop their skills.
The update on my phone and the internet
said that the State Police had arrived and the FBI were near; the shooter or "perp" was still at large.
I received a text from
Angie saying she had arrived
and was inside,
Kamryn was happy to see his family there
as they watched his
"moves on the court",
he is talented to be sure.
This is him playing defense,
but
he much prefers having HIS
hands on the ball and shooting "threes"!
When all was said and done,
and meeting the
HOKIES
and posing with pictures
and having his basketball
autographed,
they were
"escorted"
out safely
and able to leave the campus
SAFELY.
I am now breathing better,
Angie is still a bit shaken and I think that is a good thing.
Mom took them to the Red Lobster, and they have talked about it.
Kamryn now knows what was happening there
the 4th day of August 2011
at
VA TECH
the home of the Hokies
in Blacksburg VA.
He was mostly concerned of devouring the crab legs that he ordered
and enjoying his fresh salad
that probably had great tomatoes in it.
And
he was tired from playing basketball
and
thrilled by meeting
Coach Seth Greenberg
and
Paul #32 who mentors him
and
Eric Green #11
><

Coach Seth Greenberg and Kamryn!
Kamryn and #11 Eric Green HOKIE
Kamryn with his pal, mentor/coach: Paul #32

Good luck this year
VA TECH HOKIES
and
thanks for taking care of the kids!

Kamryn will one day be wearing that HOKIE
uniform
cos' he is filled with passion, desire and spirit!
A little force to be reckoned with I'm thinkin.

As for this day?
The threat that could have altered, changed lives in a hot minute?
I am amazed,
I am angry
I am blessed beyond words
a stain glasss of emotions
and
ever so grateful that all are safe as of this writing.

I cannot imagine a world without my family in it
and
especially the kids.
The percieved and very real threat
made once again it come straight at me
the importance of
NOT BLINKING in one's life.

It once again makes me want to stand on a mountain top and shout:
"what will it take for some to truly get it?"
To understand that we have this moment, this day"
What difference does it make if a kid fails a test or a grade and is too afraid or shamed to tell the truth because they do not or cannot bear to hear the judgments or scorn of others?
What difference does it truly make that you got mad at your sister 11 months ago over something so ridiculous that you now cannot remember what it was,
but are too stubborn and mean to accept that
it does not really matter?
How hard is it to say
"I'm sorry"
in the larger scope of things?
and
really now,
what difference does it make in 30 minutes or 32 days
whether you got your feelings hurt
or someone rained on your parade?
Hell there just might be another parade
or
you can start your own
parade.
The hateful spewing of words between friends or family members that amount to egos that are inflated or wounded
as a result of greed or mistrust or words that cannot be taken back
or the distaste of "crow" that every once in awhile must be eaten to move forward
is often of ones own doing.
BUT
make no mistake friends
a day like this day
when you know
that there are kids
in an auditorium
and
one of those kids lives in your heart
is of your blood
and the threat of a shooter is next door
IT HITS YOU WHERE YOU LIVE.
And
if that does not open your eyes
to the uncertainity of your world
then
perhaps
the blindness and coldness of your heart
is indeed of your choosing and permanent.
But then again, you are probably not reading this page!
Have people forgotten
that day of 1995 in Oklahoma City?
of
9/11 in NY, the Pentagon, those brave folks who deterred the third plane to Shanksville?
Today
could have been another one of those
days
just like the last tragedy
at
VA TECH.

Some things in life you cannot recover:
A stone...after it's thrown. A word...after it is said. An occasion...after it's missed. The time...after it's gone. A person...after they die.
Life is short.
 Break the rules.
Forgive quickly.
Kiss slowly.
 Love truly.
Laugh uncontrollably
And never regret anything that made you smile,
 Enjoy Life!!
 ♥

Yes, I am on my box now,
who knows at what point I will step down
it may just take someone bold enough to knock me off it!
I do know this;
there are many who stand in their own way, and who seem to go out of their way to hurt or harm others with words, or with actions of passive agressive nature
and try to think they know what is the best way for others
to live their lives.
And it is in that meddling feelings get trampled
like a stampede of cows
and
sometimes
others never recover from that pain.
And I cannot help but wonder
what those folks get out of such actions;
"did it really matter in the scheme of things?"
Each of us are works in progress,
the children, the adults and the elders...
each on our own paths.
We are not here to judge, only to enjoy ourselves
and each other.
Today
my Godson Kamryn was at VA TECH to play basketball with other kids.
Others were there to learn.
And all of a sudden a man was seen with a gun on campus
and
that meant that all there were in harms way.
It is time
to love those
 and
 hug those you love
with
unconditional positive regard.
DON'T BLINK
things can change in a hot minute.

To Kamryn,
 Mom, Angie, and D'Vante
I am so very thankful you are safe and together. May the Creator bless and keep you safe, enjoying each other, laughing and loving each other.
From a distance, my arms are around you.

The fire is burning and the sage is lit, with thoughts and prayers to all who enter here.

*****
update:
After returning home safely
and
updating Kamryn on the events that led
him to leave the building with a police escort
he looked in awe
and
asked
"why would someone do this".
Mom and Angie talked with him and he was listening intently
and
then showing resiliency and the understanding of a
hungry 9 year old
attacked his crab legs
with his hands and teeth and enjoyed each bite
and
the love and attention
of
mom and angie
both still in shock from
the day.
I later talked with them
after they returned safely home
only to hear the conflict in the background
as
D'Vante was having "issues/attitude"
and
the "it's all about me I am 17 tomorrow"
and
I could feel "cold chills going off in my brain"
once again
amazed at the selfishness of ways
and
OMG
I was fit to be tied.
BUT
mostly I was filled with such gratitude that I wept.
Later when I spoke to Mom
and
we got past the drama
of the moment
she
through her tears
told me of her fears
and thoughts as she drove to Tech.
And
again I wept.
Angie is now resting, Mom as well.
I spoke to D'Vante
and was firm, I was real, and I did NOT soft soap
what
"could have been a tragedy that could have forever altered the course of his life"
while reminding him
of
the reality of the life he is standing in
and
the silliness of knee jerk reactions
and
the inability to take back words spoken in haste
while
not recognizing
the pain of others
as they now try to stop the adrenalin
that allowed them to remain calm in the face of threat.
It is now evening
and
I'm sure we will all take a few days to get this out of our system,
I guess that it will serve as a strong
reminder.
I tried to explain it to D'Vante
like this:
"you know how your heart starts to beat really fast as you approach the line of the football field;
the ball is snapped and you have tunnel vision
and you have one thing and one thing only
and you see them coming straight after you?"
And your heart is racing?
Well son, that is how everyone associated with Tech was feeling; now add to that a gun, and the very real threat that someone or many someone's including your little brother, your aunt and your mother
could have been shot as they approached the car
and
there you go.
And now that they are home safely
you want to walk with attitude over a
cell phone? Really?
Are you kidding me?
Think for a moment, of the larger picture here
and
of "does it really matter"?
C'mon now, you are bigger than this moment?
Dig a little deeper in the caring well of your soul
and
go and hug your brother and Mom, call your Aunt
and
be glad they are alive.

AND
on that note
I'm goin to throw myself into the pool
and
forget that other people just
sometimes stand on my very last nerve
over issues
that are created just to piss me off
in the scheme of things.

Don't blink
things can change in a heart beat
and this thing
and those people you love
can be gone from sight
...
Will the squabble or the mess u stirred in yesterday have really been worth it
when you look back?
Will wasting time and energy have been
looked on as
time spent spinning in a circle
or
time spent enjoying each breath?
Ah those choices,
but
for today
VA TECH IS SAFE
so far as I hear,
but
my family is safe
and for that
I say
thank you.

Good ole' Tomato Sandwich

Fresh off the vine
and
on the table!

Just nothing like a homegrown
tomato!

I ask my dear friend to send me a picture of her homegrown tomatoes right off the vine,
and
as soon as I saw it
I could feel my mouth watering!
Oh my goodness
all I could think of
was a
good ole' tomato sandwich
with white bread
mayo, salt and pepper.

I could smell the sunshine
and
the tomato itself
and
before you knew it
I was just about drooling!
That's the thing about Florida
tomatoes just don't taste that great
unless you can find them at a produce stand
with a stamp on the carton
that says
GEORGIA!
and
only then you can believe it
if you can smell the tomatoes
before you arrive and see them.
It's if you know before your eyes
see that they are real
grown from real dirt and tended to with care.
they are the kind that are juicy when bitten into
and
oh my what taste.
Of course
we cannot leave out
FRIED GREEN TOMATOES!!!
Again my mouth drools with the thoughts of that... If you haven't tried them, you must~
Delicious they are, and rather addictive I must add.
Speaking of Fried Green Tomatoes,
have you seen the movie?
I think perhaps it is time to see it again;
a movie that is worthy of seeing every few months I'm thinking it ranks high in my book...
I might just have to work in seeing it myself this weekend now that I've brought it to the frontal lobe of my brain! LOL

I spoke with a pal out in Wisconsin who proudly told me she had just picked her first tomato of the year, and safely carried it inside.
I asked her as I was riding in a car to the airport if she was preparing for a
tomato sandwich!
She said she had never had
"just" a tomato sandwich before;
but
loved a BLT or just bacon and tomato!
I was actually speechless for a moment,
thinking
someone had never had a real
honest to goodness
old fashioned tomato sandwich on white bread?
How could this be?

So with great detail I stopped talking about my day of speaking in FT Worth
and the venue
as she is my contact for that engagement;
and
instead changed the topic
to the details of
a home-made
mouth watering
tomato sandwich!
Oh the wonderful memories it evoked
and
with great detail I described the biting into that sandwich and the tomato juice that just squirts out and down your chin!
I'm sure the driver thought me quite weird or starving by the time our conversation ended
since it began with
how some people are just to rude
to be allowed in public!
I find it wonderful  how folks still garden for relaxation while enjoying the first sightings of the fruits of their labor;
the first bean, squash, tomato.
the care that goes into planting in soil, or in pots if the soil is not just quite right
or the terrain to rough.
Perhaps the person is not physically well enough to till the land like they once did
so
they find ways to best use pots and
forearm crutches to tamp the soil and drop the seedlings
then enjoy watching sun/water/care
grow into amazing
flowers and food to nurture and sustain
and
make your mouth just water
as
you think of how doggone good it will taste!
Often it might evoke memories of childhood
and those great times
of sneaking into the garden
with the salt shaker
and hiding out there
while taking those tomatoes right off the vines
and wiping them clean with your sleeve!
then just taking a great big bite
thinking it just may be heaven right there on the spot, right then and there the best thing you ever put in your mouth.

This is a great time of the year to eat salads; I had a remarkable spinach salad last night... the textures and flavors were worthy of lingering over as we talked and shared stories and good times.
I had to share the story of Kamryn going out to a restaurant and proudly and politely ordering a salad and letting the server know that he "wanted a salad please with tomatoes, croutons, cucumbers".
When it arrived he was aghast that there was NO lettuce in the salad!
He just was astounded and then the server said,
"Sir you did not request lettuce"
We almost fell out of our chairs by the look on Kamryn's face as he said,
"All salads have lettuce, of course I wanted lettuce"!!!
That boy does love to eat, and both he and Olivia have loved tomatoes the little ones,
Cherry Tomatoes since they could swallow!
They ate them like they were chocolate
and
Olivia had a tomato plant that could not quite produce as quickly as she could eat them off the vine!
So last year she planted two hoping they could keep up better!
Life is that way,
if we allow it to be.
Take a bite;
enjoy and savor it.
Sometimes take many bites, different flavors and mix the textures all at the same time!
ENJOY
always!
Just like a homegrown tomato
or a string bean
or
a freshly dug potato
that smells sweet like the earth
and once washed and cooked will nurture
and taste wonderful to the senses
while we can be amazed at all that was done to make sure it made it to our table.

I wish you enough,
a day of abundance
a day of blessings
in all that you do
in all that you see
and
dare to be.

NEWS FLASH:  a neighbor has made a positive ID on the arsonist of Sandy and STuarts' home and a warrant has been issued.
I know the world is round!!!
We here are very excited about this news.
They continue to work in the removal of soot and re-modeling of what is more and more to become their home again, now with the thought that perhaps justice will be done, we wait.

The fire is burning brightly, the sage is fired up, with thoughts on the winds to all

One Moment

One moment
can allow you to see
beauty

In each day there are so many opportunites to view beauty,
so many times when we are called upon to make choices
without ever really knowing that choices
are available to us.
In those moments in time
we often
can be swept up in the
drama of others
the actions of many
or the movement of energy that surrounds us
in our worlds
even while in the comfort of our homes
or our
lives.
It is in those moments
that comprise our days
that it may be helpful
to remember
that we do have choices
we do and are surrounded by beuaty
if only
we remember
to breathe
and to gaze at all that is around us
while remembering
that which lives within us.
The true beauty that is
the essence
of
US.
Just as the skies that allow us to see the spirits dancing on the clouds
and glimpses of heavens
and the
beauty of the Universe that gives us the
most remarkable flowers
of summer,
we
are
the light that shines
brightly from within.
BUT
it is how we spread that light
radiating out to the world,
and
our communities
our
friends, families
and
those we touch as we move through those moments of our day
that leave an often long and lasting impact
after we have long gone
that is often like footprints
etched in the minds and hearts
of those we have met
that
will remind them of the flowers
we stop and notice
and
then
remember.
As you walk through your moments today
I hope you will
take in
the beauty that surrounds
you.

THE Hill, those folks in The Capital?congress/senate THEY STRUCK A DEAL?

Heaven help US
and
God bless the USA

A compromise has been reached
they are getting ready to vote,
but
They are NOT really "happy" did I hear?
What has "happy for them" got to do with US?

I hear and read
"they struck a deal"
and my mind can't help but
think when I hear "they struck..."
of those who struck gold and got rich!
BUt it is a "compromise and yet they are not happy"
Guess those two groups cannot be happy when called upon to work for the people.
Perhaps it is time for new people there
that will find
"happiness in working for the real people, knowing that life is compromise?"

Does that mean
once again that those "who have get"
or
by some stroke of the Creator's hand
that
those of the USA
will now "get"
a piece of those who have's salaries and benefits?

Or
are those who "have" the most
will now feel a bit of what most know as real life
and that the debt will be reduced as they will give up some that is paid by the government?
You know those things like full time salaries
FOR LIFE with full time benefits for major medical care that sit on the hill
and put their feet in deeply against the necessary changes to take care to protect all
just because they do not want to change?
OR
the continued trillions that are being spent
on the need to
take over
Afganistan
a place that
is property the USA is now "defending" with our men and women (why I can't help but continually ask)
and
then there are those with disabilities and fragilities
and hardships,
asking only for understanding and help; for
repaired durable medical equipment
so that they may live fully
and
enjoy their lives,
who find that they have to fight
uneducated and ignorant employees who are being paid by the state and government
and who decide that they enjoy saying no to some that are in need
and
at the same time saying yes to those who have no business being on the roles.

There are those who just want to resume their lives and not worry of their fellow men and women, and get on with their lives,
while others want to stand as Americans
and
do not like the idea that other countries may look at Us as less or in conflict with each other.

Then
there are those who just want this
economic conflict to end
and to
live stress free in a world of the free
where the flag flies high
and
to work hard, play hard
and do their thing
whatever that is!

BUT
for others
and there are many
who are in this
place of

meantime we sit and take in the stress of the news and the lawmakers and those in power that we elected into office.
And we hear the stories of those who gripe about our
AMERICA
and
yet we also ask
"did you write your congressman and senator",
only to hear
"why bother".

And we then know why stress and depression
and
mixed messages and actions
are sent to the brain,
yet folks are truly amazed when they get mixed results~

It is time to empower yourself,
along with sending a strong message to those in power.
Respect begins with knowing that we must respect who sits in that white house in Washington DC
and
remembering
we are free because of the brave.
The President inherited this condition of our country
he did not create it.
He is not that powerful nor is he that strong to pull such a feat, in spite of what some are thinking.
It does not matter whether anyone "likes him"
but
it sure does matter that he is respected for the leader of our nation,
and
yes
it is not a popular job,
I cannot fathom why anyone would want it.
BUT
what I really cannot understand is how
those in each party, those in power on that hill there can pull the
"I won't do this or that, just because I do not like you".
I do not get why
the cuts do not begin with the ones who are sitting fat and high, and receiving full big time salaries and full benefits for life, paid for by the government,
and those with the most,
and I do mean the most and then work down.
I do not understand why we are still in Afganistan
a land of sand
and those who want to kill our soldiers
and discredit our names and soils
and why in the world would anyone want it.
Have you really seen the photos of our Marines there?

Many people like to bully, to bluster, to just let others know of their grandness and why things work better if you listen to them, or do it their way...
We've seen that in large ways, on the big screen, in our communities, and often in our families.
I've seen it more and more on the road in the recent months, all we have to do is watch and listen
to know
that everyone has an idea, an agenda
and
a better idea.
Some are forceful in their expression and could care less how it effects or affects others when they tell you,
we are seeing that on National TV by the speaker of the house.
We are also seeing the faces of America in those we encounter in the grocery stores who worry if their check will arrive on the 3rd while this plays out.
OUR AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL
will your elected officials stand for her people?

Mr. President, you are the man we put in the house,
it is time to clean and wash the fears away
Take a stand and assure the people.
we already know it will whatever you say
will not be favorable to many,
but
then again, if we look back over history,
many who have taken a stand have not
but
they have been effective.
Some more than others,
but
we are still here,
we are still the Nation that the world looks to
that many ask much from
and
many stand in awe of.
We are the Nation that comes together
arm in arm under real and perceived threat
as
one Nation under the Creators arms
and eyes,
we survive
under times of great sadness and stress
and threat.
We are SURVIVORS
and
our colors do NOT run.
Our Ancestors
the
FIRST Americans
and now
we come from strong stock.
We are America
the many faces of great people
from those of the soil
of our rich nation
of spirit.
This is our country
our land
Those who stand with pride
do not fall.

The fire is burning brightly, the sage is lit and its smells and prayers are being sent on the wind to our President and his family, to all who gather here. Blessings to you friends.
