As much of our country awoke this morning covered in snow, ice, frigid air across our lands, we also awake to remember a day that went down in history so long ago. Anyone have someone who was there, someone that was called to there? Remembering when "our colors do NOT run"... not then, not now. Thank you Veterans, then, since then, and now.
On what has been described as just another day in a beautiful place, on a Sunday morning on December 7, 1941, the Japanese shocked
the world by bombing the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
This horrid attack was the turning point for America and for the War.
On December 8th, the nation was gathered around its radios to hear America's President
Roosevelt deliver his Day of Infamy
speech. That very same day, Congress declared war on Japan.
On December 11,
Congress declared war on Germany.
WAR, young men lost their precious lives fighting for our country. Families lost their sons, grandsons, brothers sisters, friends and valued members of communities. Over 3,500 Americans were killed or wounded in 2 waves of terror lasting 2 long hours.
350 aircraft were destroyed or damaged.
All 8 battleships of the U.S. Pacific Fleet were sunk or badly damaged - including the U.S.S. Arizona. However, all of America's aircraft carriers remained unscathed.
The sinking of the USS Arizona ended the story of the invincible battleship so they say. We are the USA, our forces, our military the best in the world...
The slogan 'Remember Pearl Harbor' mobilized a nation to its feet. These colors "don't run".
Honoring, Remembering, Thanking those who served... Those who continue to serve, "salute".

Hello Winter of 2013 on this day many across our land have poured their coffee and dared to look out the window. May the Creator keep all from harms way, and warm as the country seems to be in arctic air, the snow and ice blanketing much of the country... Temperatures ranging from -35 wind chill in Wounded Knee to 1 degree in Colorado, to oh my goodness all across the lands! I heard of this cold yesterday as I donned my flip flops, shorts and t-shirt... with pressure washer zooming I was sending warm thoughts for those 6 hours of washing the sidewalk and driveway.... water works galore like a kid gone mad on a sunny day! Sending warmth thoughts and these sore muscles to all that will take them this day and the sincere hope that no one is shoveling with the same insanity that I found my self pressure washing!
As this weather is having its way with so many, let's hope that folks have enough sense to cuddle up inside; read a good book (Down The Hallway comes to mind), watch a good movie or pen a card or two. Staying warm, or running out to throw a snowball perhaps or make a snow angel, lick an icicle then retreating back to the warmth of home. Strong prayers going up for those who have to be out and about in home care, hospice care to get to the folks they care for, in the weather, on the roads. And imagine those big trucks that have to keep on moving... Bread has to get to the store, the baked stuffs that everyone wants to be able to scent the house with for baking, What of those orders everyone makes with online shopping? Oh yes, this winter storm is sure to affect deliveries that everyone is standing at the door tapping their feet waiting on. Patience dear ones, patience is needed now... On the roads, in the stores and in your homes. Mostly within each of us, this is the time for patience, for kindness, for hope. May you have a day that is magical, that is hopeful, that is warmth and filled with imagination, creativity and "fun". Walk in beauty, DRSES www.authordrsherryeshowalter.com
A great man walked on into the next place yesterday... people in South Africa could be seen gathering in front of his home as the word spread of his transition; the dancing and singing was heard around the world. His life remembered on television as we all remembered his remarkable life. His imprint on the world, for and about others that was larger than self and devoted to peace, freedom and others.
We live now in a world where there is such turmoil, such hatred, such stress and doubt of those in leadership roles. A time that people are more into "self" than others as we hear of this one man; his journey through times that could turn the best bitter. His life, his legacy of peace, understanding, of love. WE all are born into a world not seeing color that separates us, not feeling hatred that makes us jaded nor hostile. Those things are taught, fed with poison spoons in a world that feeds things that will shape mold and grow into adults, situations, that continue to grow discontent.
LOVE WINS... Nelson won, he saw beyond bitterness, beyond color lines, beyond what is learned behaviors of so many while standing for freedom and peace. Encouraging hand to hand, soul to soul connections, knowing we all bleed red in unity. Knowing together we are capable of great things. He was and is an inspiration to the world and our lives are richer because of him. Imagine the reunions taking place as he transitioned to the next place. the homecoming he is having now... Now more than ever we need to love, to extend to another, to re-learn those things we once knew naturally. We must be stronger than ever before, to ignite the light that burns brightly within that is Creator given, that is shared with others so that they may shine brightly in LOVE.
As we move into the holidays, many are struggling now with grief, with sadness of what used to be, what once was, longing or missing traditions, people, things once held sacred, precious. As the holiday madness, the fa la la la la gets moving, we remember holidays gone by, those that used to be here, physically with us, now gone... our times together our words, actions... IF ONLY comes into play.
Take best care of you... Nurture the light within you, now more than ever before.
As Nelson Mandela walks on, as folks celebrate his 95 years, as we stand better because of his life here, his ability to stand through storms of horror, of pain, of resilience, may we use that to strengthen ourselves in all ways.
May you know hope in the holidays, peace in your soul. May you dance. May you find a "twinkle in your eye" or remember the "twinkle of another" or see the eyes of LOVE that give you all you need to do all you desire.
I had the pleasure of doing "live radio" with Scott Legere yesterday once again. We went live from 4-6pm to the thousands of listeners to that "uncensored" station that talks about everything from sports to sex to politics and everything in between. I'm usually greeted at the door by two labs, GT and ACE, both just as sweet and beautiful as they can be. Yesterday little Ace was there as I walked in to Lege talking with those smooth pipes of his along with both the guys to someone on the other end of the interview. I was quietly welcomed with hugs and nods as the show continued.
Ace welcomed me with the wagging tail and became more excited as I whipped out the xmas treat of a rawhide candy cane ... Oh yes, my first and biggest fan was excited. Dr Sherry was in the house! A bit later Rick asked little Ace to thank me as I got down on all fours, and then it happened... Ace "headbutted me" gently with so much love I had to laugh, while making sure no one took that candy cane!
It was just wonderful to join with all once again. The show has a majority of men listeners; Veterans, sports enthusiasts, men who like to "get into it" and who definitely "keep it real". I've felt it a great honor to be asked on the show over the years, last night to talk about the release of "Down The Hallway the story of one woman's journey with Dissociative Identity Disorder along with grieving during the holidays. A full plate to "gnaw on" I knew. I also knew that Lege had yet to read the book, and as we talked before the show, "catching up" he kept interrupting me saying "you are doing the show, save that for the show!" I had to laugh, for I was just "shooting the breeze" with him... He is just too wonderful. He wanted to talk about other things, to bounce thoughts like shooting baskets; his mind is just like that, but in a hot second it was time to take our seats, adjust our headphones and we were live! From talking of his sisters death less than a year ago, (gone too soon) to reincarnation, to guests that were recently there, to the love of doing live radio... ITWAS LIVE... And Ace was as happy as happy could be with that candy cane laying in the middle of the floor! It's time for "Dangerous Conversation" live with Lege. Scott Legere just flows with it; he opens by letting folks know what it is, whatever it is; he has no props in front of him nor scripts to read by. He lets his guys know who to contact who to aske to be on the show, he's a natural. He feels deeply about things he questions things, he changes the way that folks/men and woman may in fact process thoughts just by "being". He loves deeply, things often to much in his processing, but is just off the chain. We delved into the mysteries of the brain, the essence of Down The Hallway. I watched his body change, his interest peak as he looked rather amazed at times. BUT he was wanting to know more although he kept saying, "Don't give away the ending"! He was extremely funny as he tried to wrap his brain around the dimensions of multiple personalities, often the guys would jump in to the conversation as well. He began to see the book as a movie as so many others have also said as well. That took him to a brand new track of wanting to know "who would play me as the radio guy that interviewed you, oh we have to think... " From excerpts to personal questions of how it was for me to have walked with thousands in pain through the years, we moved into grief over the holidays. How to sit with "missing those we now think so strongly about"... We talked about men and grief, the differences between doing and being. Our time together seemed to go so quickly there, even Lege commented on that. We were in it, that place where it gets tangled and dark. We seemed to bring it to the light though as we moved the energy, moved the ideas forward and the realization once again that "anticipation of an event/holiday is usually worst than the actual event/holiday". I reminded Scott and listeners to "say their names" of those no longer here, to honor them with ritual. I watched as he said the name of those he loved, I saw his body change, he felt change, I saw his face, his eyes. He moved it himself, I was just there. We had a powerful evening together live on RadioIo. Take the step to embracce the light within you... Even if you are on your tiptoes, just take your steps... Thanks to all ... because of you > I am more. Walk in beauty DRSES www.authordrsherryeshowalter.com
Bonnie Raitt a career that spans over 40 years, and she had a sold out house in Ruth Eckerd Hall on their feet screaming 'MORE'.... She was all that she has ever been and more, as she came back to play for another 30 or 40 minutes with passion, with the blues and a rendition of Angle of Montgomery that brought tears to my eyes and a heart that was overfilled... I have loved her music since "back in the day" the days when there were small juke joints and performers walked among the ones who enjoyed them so much in D.C. She is one of the finest with her bluesy sound and that remarkable ability to play the slide guitar. It was incredible watching her finger work and be absorbed in the sound of it all. When Bonnie takes her hands off that guitar, is lost in the music, her left hand seems to be in the air but those fingers are busy.. they move like they are still working the frets and money down she has no awareness of that. She is filled with spirit, she is sassy, she is on fire in the lights and in the moment of her music. She was all that she has ever been last night, and more. After a 7 year break Bonnie has just released her new album and it is off the hook. Something to talk about it is, something to listen to, get into, get lost by. Her musicians, from the guitar to drummer to that incredible man on the keyboards were stunning in their abilities, in their timing, in their own lights. When they came together... it was as magical as the sound man who's been with Bonnie 28 years, the lights that accented the moments that took the audience where the music and that voice led them... Amid the screams, the shouts of "Bonnie we do love you", she sang her songs, she moved her body in only a way the music would let her. Between songs one of her guys would walk toward her with a different guitar, place it gently over her neck and take the last one to its place where many others stood as she talked with those of us there, as she laughed, and at the end as she was humbled by the standing ovations and the roaring thunder of applause. She it seemed was as thrilled as everyone there. I was able to "give her something to talk about" when she is on the road now ... A little something to "gnaw on" if you will. A Christmas gift of Down The Hallway just might give her something to do while on the bus to Louisiana as she rests her voice for the next leg of the tour!
Yes, Bonnie Raitt was"Burnin Down The House" , her voice was incredible, she was filled with her music from back when to right now! If you ever have the chance to see her, just do it!
"Take My love with you" Bonnie Style, enjoy
Enjoy this day, listen to the music, dance, feel the strength that is within you...
We've celebrated Thanksgiving, we've heard about or participated in Black Friday, we've hopefully joined in to support local businesses for Small Business Saturday, we've raised our voices with joyous noise for prayerful intentions on Sunday, lived through Cyber Monday....
Today is "Giving Day"... It's a day to give, to perhaps pay it forward just because you can, because you are kind, because you are a carrier of enthusiasm or of generous spirit or wonderful thoughts.
It's a day to remember that we are never better than when doing something outside of ourselves and for the greater good of others. Money tight? don't let that stop you. You can always just holler at someone, give a call to another, carry the groceries of someone that seems to need a bit of help loading their car!
Bring in the empty trash cans of a neighbor nearer to the door perhaps. Re-fill someone's coffee just cos' you can!
Give a smile to another, watch them look at you wondering if they know you or immediately shift their own face into a smile of return. It could change their day... and you have given something precious, a moment in time freely to another.
Take a few minutes to run through your closet, through your kitchen... Are you really using all the "stuff" you have there? If not ... load up that trunk of yours and take a drive to where ever or whoever is collecting stuff for others that may just be giddy with the notion of receiving it. Drop it off, get a receipt if you like for your taxes and make some room for yourself in the process. Make the most room for that feeling of giving to another as your light shines brighter within. Feeling sadness of the coming holidays? Old man grief coming in as you are missing someone/something ? MOVE... move the energy, the feelings through you by giving to others in ways that you can in the memory of those who are no longer here with us. That might just help you to stand stronger. Many are feeling or expressing that they are sad, feel broken during the holidays... it is just so hard as the holidays near. YOU are not broken, you do not want (I would hope) to be broken. We all would do well to visualize the great willow tree, strong enough to bend. today's inspiration by the one and only Bonnie Raitt: "I will not be broken"
sing, dance, move feelings through you as you move into this day and all days. Remember those who are no longer here with us and honor them by living the best life you know. Give of you, your life, your energy to others as you find you will feel life stronger, energy higher and love stronger both here and from the next place the angels will surround you. As December begins, the hustle and bustle of the holidays, many are missing those who have gone before us. Many many are filled with memories when their lives were brighter somehow but now stand in the sea of grief. The holidays can be harsh for those missing loved ones. It is soon to be the time when folks will gather around the globe to remember the children, ALL the children who have died.
The Compassionate Friends will once again bring together what is perhaps the largest gathering of folks to light the candles in remembrance of those children, ALL children, all ages, all causes who are "gone too soon".
Worldwide Candle Lighting
People will gather, in large and small groups around our globe in fellowship. Some for the first time, in shock, in numbness, with such profound new grief. They will be met by others who have walked grief's path; others will join once again with hugs and that knowing look in their eyes. They have walked a path of pain, of such loss that brings them together in unity.. Some will arrive around 6pm to help set up the room, they will break bread together, some will have music playing as they find their seats, as they look for familiar faces, or see themselves in the faces of others.
At 7pm they will be lighting candles for one hour to honor, to stand, to share the light of those no longer here.
Imagine the sight around our globe and the light of healing.
visualize the
memories of the sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and grandchildren
who left too soon. As candles are lit at 7:00 p.m. local time, hundreds
of thousands of people join their love and energy as they commemorate and honor the memory of all children
gone too soon.
Many who cannot attend, many who have not lost their own child, but love and care deeply, will also be lighting candles in or at their homes. It is powerful, it is healing, it is for the children, and also for those still here. IT is a flame to inspire those holding those candles to embrace the light.
Now
believed to be the largest mass candle lighting on the globe, the 17th
annual Worldwide Candle Lighting, a gift to the bereavement community
from The Compassionate Friends, creates a virtual 24-hour wave of light
as it moves from time zone to time zone.
Started in the United
States in 1997 as a small internet observance, but has since swelled in
numbers as word has spread throughout the world of the remembrance.
Hundreds of formal candle lighting events are held and thousands of
informal candle lightings are conducted in homes as families gather in
quiet remembrance of children who have died, but will never be
forgotten.
When we talk about children; we talk about the tiniest to those who have grown. To those who died suddenly, those with rare or common disease, to those who went to bed and never woke up, to human error in medical settings, to those who made bad choices, to those who were victims of accidents, of horrendous happenings.
All were; ALL ARE LOVED beyond measure by someone; parents, siblings, grandparents, communities, friends. All are missed, all are mourned. All are remembered always.
The pain of grief has its way with folks during the holidays' ... it can be sneaky, it can be forceful. It can also be better handled when acknowledged, when faced...
Say their names, honor them.
Ask yourself: "How can I live my life as the legacy now?" "How would my loved one want me to dance now?"
I wish you the strength to heal, the desire to move into your holiday wanting to be more than the emotions that are sometimes so powerful that you find yourself wanting to scream.
Just SCREAM... and notice how your body feels, how you feel. Know that is ok, if that is what you need to do. Just keep moving, one step then two; working hard to move on with life finding gratitude that you are still here to say their names and to live your life in a way that all are proud of.
Walk in beauty,
Check out where those gatherings are happening.
buckle up your courage, join us!
"So that their lights may always shine" the world will be lighting those candles.
I do believe we are also lighting those candles "so that their light reminds the holder of the candles that they can; if they choose, to shine on, differently... yet brightly within"
Know that you are being thought of around the globe, and that we will light those candles together so that their lights may shine brighter.
Around 100,000 are currently living with HIV in the UK and globally
an estimated 34 million people have HIV. More than 25 million people
between 1981 and 2007 have died from the virus, making it one of the
most destructive pandemics in history. Today, many scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment,
there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so
much more about the condition. But despite this, people do not know the
facts about how to protect themselves and others from HIV, and stigma
and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with HIV.
World AIDS Day is important as it reminds the public and Government that
HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money,
increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education. WE MUST INCREASE AWARENESS... We sure do miss Dame Elizabeth Taylor.
A statement from the HHS Secretary on this day:
A statement by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius
When
the World Health Organization established the first World AIDS Day on
December 1, 1988, treatment options for people living with HIV were
practically nonexistent, and AIDS was almost invariably fatal. Hope was
in short supply, and there seemed to be little reason for optimism. I am
grateful that the world is a very different place for the 25th annual World AIDS Day.
Thanks
to tremendous advances in our understanding of the disease and how to
treat it, millions of individuals, both in the U.S. and around the
globe, are now truly living with HIV.
As we observe World AIDS Day 2013 under the Federal theme of Shared Responsibility: Strengthening Results for an AIDS-Free Generation,
we reflect on U.S. led initiatives that have helped bring about this
dramatic change. We rededicate ourselves to working with our partners
across the nation and around the globe to fortify and intensify our
efforts in HIV prevention, testing, care and treatment, and research.
The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is marking its 10th
anniversary of leadership in the global response to HIV. PEPFAR now
directly supports life-saving antiretroviral treatment for millions of
men, women, and children worldwide. Together with the Global Fund to
Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and partner nations, we are working
toward an AIDS-free generation around the world.
Here in the U.S., guided by the National HIV/AIDS Strategy,
(NHAS), agencies and offices across the Department of Health and Human
Services are working to strengthen HIV prevention, care and treatment
efforts. As President Obama directed earlier this year when he
established the HIV Care Continuum Initiative,
we are accelerating efforts to increase HIV testing as well as improve
access to and retention in HIV care. That way, we can better address
drop-offs along the continuum of HIV care, from diagnosis to receiving
optimal treatment. Fewer than half of the people living with HIV are
getting the medical care they need, and only about 25 percent have
achieved control over their HIV infection with medication. Such control
both benefits their health and reduces the likelihood of HIV
transmission.
So, we still have much to do.
The Affordable Care Act
provides critical support to help us reach these goals. The health care
law makes it illegal (already for children, and in 2014 for adults) for
insurance companies to deny anyone coverage because they have HIV;
eliminates lifetime benefit caps and starting in 2014, annual dollar
limits; and generally requires health insurance plans to cover HIV
testing and other preventive services such as domestic violence and STI
screening and counseling, without any additional out-of-pocket costs to
the patient. It also authorizes states to expand Medicaid eligibility,
which would extend coverage to more people living with HIV.
The
Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program remains a vital element of our national
response to HIV, supporting critical efforts to engage and retain
clients in care and demonstrating improved health outcomes for those
clients across the HIV care continuum. Similarly, other HHS
programs—including CDC’s HIV prevention activities, NIH’s HIV research,
FDA’s regulation of HIV medicines, tests and devices, and many other
activities—all remain essential parts of our response to HIV. We are
grateful to the dedicated HHS personnel working to advance these efforts
and all of our non-federal partners for their innovation, persistence,
and passion.
Finally, I am pleased to note an improved tool in our response: an updated, more user-friendly Common Patient Assistance Program Application
(CPAPA). The form allows uninsured low-income people living with HIV
who do not qualify for insurance or other assistance to fill out a
single form to apply for life-saving HIV drugs from multiple
patient-assistance programs. This simplified process is the result of a
public-private partnership involving HHS, pharmaceutical companies, the
National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors, and community stakeholders.
As we observe this 25th
World AIDS Day, hope and optimism are thankfully no longer in short
supply. Please join us in this global observance by learning more about
HIV/AIDS in your community and how you can be part of the movement to
create an AIDS-free generation and help to bring an end to this global
health crisis.
You can find ways to get involved by visiting CDC’s Let’s Stop HIV Together website or learning about AIDS.gov’s Facing AIDS campaign, which invites you to help reduce HIV-related stigma and promote HIV testing by putting a face to AIDS.
We
can all make a difference. Here at HHS we are commemorating World AIDS
Day through multiple activities, including offering HIV testing to
employees and supporting staff who are volunteering with local HIV
service providers.
