Time to fly to Durant OKLAHOMA

Good Thursday to everyone and everything! As a cold front moves into Florida I am on my way to Tampa International Airport to board American Airlines for the friendly skies and bound for Durant Oklahoma! I will then be hosted by a remarkable woman there; she has lived in her city for most of her life and decided that it was past time to organize a seminar for all those who are in the business of caring for others. She has worked and worked for months to pull this event together, with passion and purpose as she single handedly managed to get the ear of counselors, health care, hospice, caregiver organizations, Police Departments, Fire Departments, those in the front lines and Universities alike. She feels strongly about the caregivers and those who forget to take best care of self along the way. She has found that many just "don't know what they don't know" and others feel that they are doing fine just fine in the ways that they have always done. Yet she continued on her path, and has folks ready to spend a day in refueling their passion and their desire to take better care of themselves in what they do for a living along with those who care for and about loved ones in communities. It often takes only one person with a fire, a passion to extend that light to another and before you know it, the town and community burn brighter than ever before and those who stand somehow stand closer and tighter together, while being open to receive life and its many gifts. It doesn't really matter who lit the first match, it matters more that the compassion is extended in ways before unimagined by faith in each step along the way!
Yes I am being welcomed to Durant Oklahoma by a bright light, a woman I call Osh, and who has just amazed me in her faith, her commitment to her community and her desire to make things better for people. A woman who sees a need and doesn't know the word "quit" as she continues to spread the word of self-care and hope in the world of so many along each day with determination and sheer grit. A light so bright that she has indeed gone places in spirit and in travels there that tickle me to life as she talks about the need for a seminar on Compassion Fatigue for those who care for others. I will enter Choctaw Nation with honor and reverence, and it will be a joyful experience to gather with so many of such diverse backgrounds and places of work, with life experiences and those who have walked the walk that only they know.  Through tears, fears, heartaches and stories that they do or do not move through them, we will gather at a Vo Tech Center for a day that will be uplifting, educating, and I feel certain I will learn more than I provide to others as I meet and share a space with those from Texas and Choctaw Nation. I am honored to have been asked to join with nurses, first responders, students, teachers, LPC's, social workers, counselors, PT/OT, physicians, front line workers, food service workers, case workers, child protective staff, Women's services, Empower, the Mayor of Durant, caregivers, folks from the Big 5 Organization, and so many others. It will be a day of authentic gathering with the hope that folks leave better than they came, perhaps walking a bit lighter, their shoulders a bit more relaxed, their heart a bit lighter, and they will have been as glad to spend the day with me as I know I will be to have had the opportunity to be with all of them.
And for that I give thanks, and so it is!

May you have a wonderful week, a joyful time of knowing that each step is the best step leading to the next step of wonderment along the path as you track the sun across the sky.
 May you walk in Beauty

Suicides in the Military

They stand for US, they fight, they signed up to protect our country, and represent the best of the best. In all the Armed Forces now we are seeing the statistics; hearing of their stories, and the horrors we even witness on the news of what they see, hear, do, and absorb into their very being. Suicide rates are now at a record high among those serving our great Nation. Those who have served, are serving. Those who have returned home and now find that they do not "fit in" as nothing seems as it was. The intrusive images, nightmares, flashbacks, and horror have made their way into the brain of these soldiers and they often suffer PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder that is complicated; families in their hearts expect the same person who left them to return to them.
2012 held the highest numbers of completed suicides in history. Some will say that each 25 hours someone died of suicide serving last year. More lives were lost to suicide than that of combat. Lives forever changed, families forever changed, the landscape of love forever changed by war and those who felt helpless or clueless to step up or step in to prevent it.
The Army placed their toll of suicides at 182, and perhaps that was a count that was less than reported. During 2012, there also were 60 suicides among active-duty members of the Navy, 59 in the Air Force and 48 in the Marine Corps. Again, these numbers are the ones that were reported to the Pentagon.
Some were deployed, some were not... all leaving behind those who loved or cared about them. Programs need to address the traumas, the pain that our soldiers and community face to instill interventions, to find ways to be there as we continue to see more and more men and women returning home from war. We know that they will need services, support and others to help with that transition. We know that who they were before they left American Soil is not who they will return as.

Particularly not in this climate of hate, of political unrest and uncertainty. These men and women have been fighting for our freedoms; they are and will be confronted with another war zone; that of unhappy political confrontation  when the plane sets down on our soils. We must find the brightest of the bright to address the myriad of emotional/physical/spiritual states and find them assistance to re develop healthy coping strategies for them, community, and their families.
We must remind them that we appreciate them, that they matter, their lives are precious and that we STAND for them and their lives.
It has been said that suicides for the military are after all lower than that of mainstream America... well ok, and the point is?
This is the Military we are now speaking on, those men and women who signed the blank check on their lives for our country, and then put on a uniform and gave up the 9-5 jobs for all of US... they formed alliances of their forces and now need to be able to trust that we all in the field of helping know what we are doing to help and to be there when they return; that the military will be as strong by their side as they were at the recruiting stations to see them through the transitions back into the life they lived before war. We have a responsibility to keep mental health services intact even if we have to rename them in order for people to embrace them. We have a responsiblity to human kind to be there in the darkest hour and together to get to the light. A moral and ethical responsiblity called life and gratitude to those who serve our country and for each and every person who takes a breath and feels hopeless. Families and loved ones have not been inside or on the sand with those in the Uniform but often receive the letters from sons and daughters, husbands, wives and can hear or see the pain. they are not the experts, yet want their loved one back intact.
When soldiers leave the war zones, get on the plane headed home, they then enter the danger zone... it used to be called 'home'.
We must empower and teach them to love themselves and to know we are STANDING with them.

Tonight I will be joining Scott Ledger again on Dangerous Conversations as we talk to veterans about SUICIDE and the Military on "2100 Hours"
Tune in 9-11pm On www.RadioIo.com
Ledge and I will be there talking to some Vets!

Suicide is an insidious killer. It is raging in our Military, in people across the world, yes in celebrities that get noticed and talked about, in some high profile situations and those that make the news.
It is happening in places some do not know exist.
Suicide among Native American YOUTH is the highest of anywhere or anyone in our country. All over reservations of South Dakota and beyond, suicide has become the  second leading cause of death for Lakota youth, American Indians, Alaskans, between the ages of 15-24. They are completing suicides at a rate of more than 3 times the national average.
...
More soldiers are dying by suicide than in combat.
...

Risk Factors
  • Family history of suicide
  • Family history of child maltreatment
  • Previous suicide attempt(s)
  • History of mental disorders, particularly clinical depression
  • History of alcohol and substance abuse
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Impulsive or aggressive tendencies
  • Cultural and religious beliefs (e.g., belief that suicide is noble resolution of a personal dilemma)
  • Local epidemics of suicide
  • Isolation, a feeling of being cut off from other people
  • Barriers to accessing mental health treatment
  • Loss (relational, social, work, or financial)
  • Physical illness
  • Easy access to lethal methods
  • Unwillingness to seek help because of the stigma attached to mental health and substance abuse disorders or to suicidal thoughts
Native American youth have the largest suicide deaths in the country.

Protective Factors
  • Effective clinical care for mental, physical, and substance abuse disorders
  • Easy access to a variety of clinical interventions and support for help seeking
  • Family and community support (connectedness)
  • Therapy
  • Support from ongoing medical and mental health care relationships
  • Skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, and nonviolent ways of handling disputes
  • Cultural and religious beliefs that discourage suicide and support instincts for self-preservation
  • Hope appreciation Compassion
  •  Funding for our Relations and wounded warriors
Take a stand, extend a hand, reach one teach one, save one.
Thank you to all who serve, your lives are so very valuable to all of us.

SNOW MOON...

The snow moon was stunning last night, seen here in Tarpon Springs FL, and it sure has been named well across parts of the land. Record snows and cold are being felt across the Mid-West and New England once again as snow continues to fall. That enchanting moon made its way through the clouds in a mysterious way, while so many are counting down until spring and devising ways to maneuver out on the roads today and get where they need to be in order to do what they need to do for so many dependent upon them.  The snow moon while beautiful to see, was probably not seen by those who had been out in harsh weather, those who were shoveling and bending and doing so much in those places of storms and ice and such cold. Wind and rain are the name of the came today in the sunshine state, yet it is balmy almost after a night of the splendid moon here.  A day of gratitude after seeing the moon in all its glory and beauty. Hearing now that the newest of storms out in Kansas and places like that has been named, "Rocky" as it is sure packing a punch on folks and areas across  CO, to MI, to IN, to OK, ND, SD, ... and we cannot leave out New England where the weekends seem to bring them snow and more snow.
With such heavy snows and severe cold during this time of the year, this moon has also been known to be called the "Hunger Moon" by Native Americans as it also makes for slim hunting. We have seen some weather of this year and watched as many survive what seems to be the worst of the worst, yet survive the strongest storms with resilience and hands that extend to another in homes, communities and on the roads. The best of people come out to help in times like this. First responders, community members are the ones we find extend and are behind those stuck cars, pushing and finding strength to move mountains to help another, working together, and getting the job done.
Just as Stephen Bright of Comfort Keepers in Kansas bundled up in his snowsuit and got in his vehicle to find and secure staff safely who were stuck on the roads and get them to safety, he got to patients in need and made sure they were tucked in for the storm with food and medications along the way. Now today we hear that thousands and thousands are without power, trees that were gorgeous and lush are not about to fall over from the weight of snow... Many in dark at home as the sun begins to rise... Yet ole' Stephen Bright is goin to outshine the sun and the white stuff already in his SUV and on his way to do his thing and lead staff for others... Just as Crossroads Hospice in KS under the leadership of Janet Hessenflow makes sure that her staff in green will once again have all they need to tuck their patients in for the snow that fell and is falling, the treacherous ice, and are out there in blizzard conditions; a plan was in place with safety and patients first... it takes a community and it's 24/7 for folks like that. Those folks in KS and those communities know each other, work together and often will join in on whatever is needed to get things done! Bravo and I wish you all the warmth and safety as you brave the roads today and then home to your own sanctuaries called "home".
Just as the Guardian Angel Hospice of Indiana don their purple working under the leadership of 5 strong women who lift them up they all spread their wings in the snow to make things happen for those they provide care and support to, during the snow moon and in the brightness of the snow, when it would be so wonderful to bundle up at home and or make a snowman standing on his head at home. WE hear some talk about what a dredge it is to suffer through the weather, while others are the weather, extending themselves to another and being as unique as each snowflake that falls. Many are finding their way out to Nursing Homes, Hospitals, ER's, Hospices, where they are open no matter the weather; to 911 dispatches, police departments, fire departments, to places where we depend on.  Once again proving it takes a community of caring, and doing, not sitting back and thinking on it or finding reasons that it won't work.  Oh the people who just stand in the light of the snow moon, the sun, and no moon at all.

Behind the most daunting of clouds is something remarkable, something Bright... faith and belief may just astound you in the darkest night or the darkest of times.
keep the faith friends, spring is on the way!

Now remember... things get a bit wacky in times of the full moon, days before, during and after. So be safe out there, don't wear your feelings on your sleeve, and grin a lot. Smile a lot, even laugh a lot. It will help!

Thank you to all those who are out there doing all those things that others cannot in this snow time and anytime there is a need.
Thank you to all who are serving our great Nation.
Thank you everyone and everything.

Good Day for Good thoughts, you get to choose

I can imagine this may be the sentiment out west and in New England as the snow has once again raged on areas that are still digging out from under plowed in cars and the winds are howling, the temps are falling, and folks are trying and trying to get to work, to get to patients in snows and ice, while wondering who angered Mother Nature! Spring is really on the way, as I noticed it is a bit lighter later in the day, and that we should be just about ready to entertain flip flops while putting away the boots and sweaters! Yes it's a great day for good thoughts, a day to breathe deeply and exercise good decisions for those out there in harms way picking up shovels and trying to do it all and be it all with clearing driveways and forging into the roads while facing all sorts of dilemmas and stress where snow has stranded too many to mention. Some have gotten quite creative, building snowmen standing on their heads with legs of wood sticking out the top and boots to top it all off! Others have decorated the yards with food color saying "Enough, Ain't got time for this".... but so many others are just trying to get through it, and many others are clapping their hands in joy about the look and feel of yet another winter wonderful white land of snow!
Pretty it is, especially if you don't need to get out in it, don't need milk, coffee, or feel the need to get out and about.
Oh my, the photographs are beautiful, but it's good to see from a distance for me.
Safe and warm prayers going up for all those being affected and feeling the snow chill out and up there where another record snow is in the making and plans are being made to do what is needed and be what is needed for so many.  May the guardians of safety along with common sense keep people safe and away from harm once they are on the street and behind the wheel.
Speaking of wheels and going around and round, more prayers for those who were harmed in Daytona at that horrid crash that left parts, wheels and debri flying into the stands from the race. A day where a woman was in the line-up, where the roar of the engines was deafening and the race went on, and round the track and there was a winner...
The Oscars, the beauty, the wonder, the talents, the reviews and those that talk about those things; later criticizing or slamming or telling us why or not one should have won. Oh the choices, the views, the thoughts of so many who weigh in with opinions, good bad or indifferent.

Good thoughts as we enter a new week; a week of great possibilities and endless ideas running through hearts, minds and nervous systems. Some made with pure intentions, some with judgments, some with great care and planning, all choices; some reflections of memories and some just happens chance. Humor still will assist all in coping, particularly in those cold and snowy lands we hear about along with the areas of needing a hand with the activities of everyday life.

Yes, those good thoughts will be at times hard to get to, but they can be brought to the front of the brain, and then a deep breath will seat them there if you choose it.
Choose wisely, step carefully and steer yourself in directions that take you to those good thoughts this week... It's a great day to embrace good thoughts, do good deeds, to be gentle with you with each breath.

 May you walk in beauty

Just DO IT...

Focus, practice, and the desire
JUST DO IT
Kamryn let me know that he could just transfer that spinning basketball onto my finger, no problem and teach me how to do it!
JUST DO IT
Of course there is the part of learning how to hold your mouth just right, sometimes holding it at an angle, sometimes tongue out and mouth wide open and other times with your jaw set, but always with mindful purpose and focus.
JUST DO IT
There may be obstacles to crawl, losses and trials, and mountains to move. There may be snow to shovel and great storms in the way.
JUST DO IT
Whatever you see, whatever you believe you will find your way to it
if you set your mind to it
and
JUST DO IT
....
Prayers goin up today for those who are bracing for yet another major snow storm in the Midwest and New England, may you be warm and safe.
Thoughts are surrounding those in Daytona after the major crash on the track left many devastated and badly hurt.
Prayers are going up as the fire is lit.
We hold you all up and pray you well.

For Lousise E. Duckwork and her family, friends, Brother Michael Belford,
...
For Sandy Hook and those in Newtown CT., for all those who have been touched, shattered and devastated by violence we are with you here and pray for an end to such horrible things happening in our world.

To those who are fighting the fight,

we are fighting alongside you and thinking about you.
For those fighting this flu and bug around the globe and those fighting battles of chronic illness and pain, prayers of strength and healing going up.
Rebecca, Hudson, Peyton, Dottie, Zero, George, Peyton, Billy Ray, Yvonne, Les, Lana, Lanita, Kelly, John, Bill,
