Full Corn Moon ~ The Gathering Season is Here

Blessed and brilliant morning....
How bout that Harvest moon {Full Corn Moon}last night?
Wow, and I thought the moon was full night before last... did you get to see it, to marvel at it, to gaze in wonder and its glory?
Were you able to begin your howling of thanksgiving for the change of season that is now upon us...

There are many festivals of thanksgiving to the Great Spirit and to nature for crops and life; many are still celebrated in homes, at Pow Wows, and on reservations, and across tribes, spiritualities and cultures. Many begin with the Harvest moon!

Many nations have thanked the Great Spirit for providing abundance after the first full moon of September. This moon will be so bright you can almost read a book by it ~

Northern summer changed to fall on Sept. 22nd at 11:09 pm EDT. At that precise moment, called the autumnal equinox, the Harvest Moon was found soaring high overhead with the planet Jupiter right beside it. Here we had the clouds dancing through that remarkable sight, but it was still a sight to behold and to give thanks for!
The two brightest objects in the night sky were in spectacular conjunction as they marked change in seasons.

The Harvest Moon gets its name from agriculture some say... some of course dating back to the First Americans.
In the days before electric lights, farmers depended on bright moonlight to extend the workday beyond sunset.
It was the only way they could gather their ripening crops in time for market.
The full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox became "the Harvest Moon," and it was always a welcome sight.
This one would be extra welcome because it is extra "Harvesty."

Usually, the Harvest Moon arrives a few days to weeks before or after the beginning of fall. It's close, but not a perfect match.

The Harvest Moon of 2010, however, reached maximum illumination a mere six hours after the equinox.

This has led some astronomers to call it the "Harvestest Moon" or a "Super Harvest Moon."
There hasn't been a comparable coincidence since Sept 23, 1991, when the difference was about 10 hours, and it won't happen again until the year 2029.
A Super Harvest Moon, a rare twilight glow, a midnight conjunction—rarely does autumn begin with such celestial fanfare ~

There are many legends across the world about the moon in all its mystery, in all its beauty; tribes/clans/cultures...

today I offer you but one: I hope you enjoy it as we STOMP into the gathering season of 2010 ~

A native American Indian legend tells of a village near where the sun sets and the people had the moon. Other people were trying to go there and steal the moon to put it back in the sky, knowing that they would be able to see by its glow and that was its rightful place there in the sky.
The Indians knew the other people wanted to take the moon. The Indians were hiding the moon and planned to kill the other people when they tried to steal the moon from them.
Two antelopes decided that they would steal the moon themselves because they were so fast and could outrun everyone. The bears attempted to hold council with them letting them know this was not of honor or a good idea, but that talk did no good, the antelope were determined... the bears sat back as did the other animals, watching, waiting, listening and talking amongst themselves...

So the antelope snuck by the Indians and stole the moon.
The antelopes ran so fast the Indians weren't even close to catching up with them. The antelopes ran for a very long time until they got too tired to go any further.
Then they stopped at the next Indian village.
They put the Moon outside a teepee and went inside.
A very sneaky man called Coyote (also known as The Trickster) saw the Moon and thought he could steal it without the antelopes hearing. Coyote crept up very quietly and grabbed the moon. After Coyote got the moon he ran the fastest he had ever run.
The antelopes heard him and started after him. They could not catch up to Coyote because he had such a head start, and once again animals along the way, looked on in amazement at what was happening.
Coyote was heading towards the lake. When he got there he threw the moon into the lake as far as he could, and it still lies there today waiting to rise as sister sun sets at dusk.. and then rises... rises for all to see and absorb its beauty and power in the night sky, and its brilliance among the stars in spirit land. And so it is good.

This whole year has been zooming by. And now the fall is upon us. Maybe the sneaky Coyotes have had a hand in this too. Now how dumb is it that I never really thought of the Harvest Moon as a signal for farmers to begin their harvest? What rock do I live under? Silly me.
Maybe I have never lives close enough to farm land to get the picture. Best o all on thisnew day. Friday! Another glorious weekend is upon us!
